Montreal is the nerve centre of a 1770-kilometre network of highways built mainly between the late 1950s and mid-1970s on its outskirts. 17 road bridges and one tunnel cross the waterways that surround the island of Montreal. These include the Champlain Bridge, the busiest bridge in Canada.
The Montreal suburbs are made up of 81 cities grouped together in the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal. Together, including Montreal, these municipalities cover an area of 4,360 km2 and have a population of 3.7 million, almost half of the population of Quebec. They form the 15th largest urban area in North America and the 77th largest in the world. The main cities in the Montreal suburbs are Laval (399,400 inhabitants), Longueuil (232,516 inhabitants) and Terrebonne (101,558 inhabitants).
